It prints “U”. Unicode literals in Java are usually of the form \uxxxx, where xxxx is the hexadecimal form of the Unicode code point. In this case, U+0055 is the Unicode code point of the letter U. But what’s with all the other ‘u’s?

According to section 3.3 of the Java language specification, extra ‘u’s can be added. This is intended to support the encoding of any valid Java source file in ASCII without losing any information and making the encoded file still valid Java with the same meaning. The intended encoding is that a non-ASCII character is turned into a unicode literal, and any unicode literal is turned into a unicode literal with an extra ‘u’ in it. Thus the statement

		char café = '\uabcd'; 

gets encoded as

		char caf\u00e9 = '\uuabcd';
