Simon Nickerson's Research
Up until 2005, I was a
PhD student in
Mathematics
at the
University of Birmingham, supervised
by
Professor R. A. Wilson.
My research was in finite group theory, and I was particularly
interested in computations with finite simple groups and related groups,
such as their automorphism groups and covers.
In my PhD thesis, I constructed
characteristic zero representations for some quasi-simple groups for
the ATLAS
of Finite Group Representations. I also found standard generators
for those groups which didn't have them defined.
Here is an
unflattering photo of me giving a talk.
- An Atlas of Characteristic Zero Representations - PhD thesis and representations (submitted as a CD-ROM)
- Semi-presentations for the sporadic simple groups
- Preprint of article (article published in Exp. Math.)
- A 20 minute talk I gave at the
Nikolaus 2004 Conference at RWTH-Aachen.
- Rational reconstruction of representations
- Maximal subgroups of the sporadic almost-simple groups - my
MPhil thesis.

The Mathieu groups
-
Moggie -
a Java applet for playing with the MOG of Robert Curtis. You might
find it helpful if you're studying the sporadic Mathieu group
M24
or the wonderful
S(5,8,24) Steiner system. Source code available on request.
- An essay I wrote under the supervision
of
Dr. J. Saxl
for Part III
of the Cambridge Mathematical Tripos. It presents a construction
of the Mathieu groups (especially
M24) and the
Conway group
.0 = 2.Co1.
